CO2 emissions from saline lakes: A global estimate of a surprisingly large flux

چکیده
[1] The role of saline lakes in CO2 exchange with the atmosphere was evaluated on the basis of calculated partial pressure (pCO2) and CO2 exchange rates with the atmosphere derived from a compilation of published data for 196 saline lakes around the world. The average surface water pCO2 exceeded atmospheric pCO2 by a factor of 5–8 times, indicative of a tendency for saline lakes to emit CO2 to the atmosphere. Chemically enhanced emission, calculated from solute chemistry, pH, and wind speed, increased gas exchange an average of 2.3 times over that of freshwater lakes having equivalent pCO2. The globally distributed lakes emitted CO2 at rates in excess of 80 mmol m 2 d . TheCaspian Seawas calculated to support alone a total CO2 emission of 0.02 to 0.04GtC a , with the total CO2 emissions to the atmosphere from saline lakes calculated to be 0.11– 0.15 Gt C a . Consideration of CO2 emissions from saline lakes raises the total CO2 emissions to the atmosphere from all lakes to 0.28–0.32 Gt CO2. These results point to a significant role of saline lakes in global C cycling.

Upscaling carbon dioxide emissions from lakes
Quantifying CO2 fluxes from lakes to the atmosphere is important for balancing regional and global-scale carbon budgets. CO2 emissions are estimated through statistical upscaling procedures that aggregate data from a large number of lakes. However, aggregation can bias flux estimates if the physical and chemical factors determining CO2 exchange between water and the atmosphere are not independe...
متن کاملSpatio-temporal variability and an integrated assessment of lake and stream emissions in a catchment
Freshwater bodies such as lakes and streams release the greenhouse gases methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. Global freshwater CH4 and CO2 emissions have been estimated to be of a similar magnitude to the global land or ocean carbon sink, and are thus significant components of global carbon budgets. However, the data supporting global estimates frequently lacks informati...
متن کاملEstimation of greenhouse gases emissions from urban traffic: a case study of Hamadan city
Background and Objective: Transportation sector generates the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 and CH4) which causes global warming. “Stop-and-go” driving and congested traffic flow results in a decrease in average car speeds, an increase in traffic incidents, and finally escalates GHGs emissions. Hence, congestion is directly related to carbon emissions. The objective of this stu...
متن کاملMethane and carbon dioxide emissions from inland waters in India - implications for large scale greenhouse gas balances.
Inland waters were recently recognized to be important sources of methane (CH4 ) and carbon dioxide (CO2 ) to the atmosphere, and including inland water emissions in large scale greenhouse gas (GHG) budgets may potentially offset the estimated carbon sink in many areas. However, the lack of GHG flux measurements and well-defined inland water areas for extrapolation, make the magnitude of the po...
متن کاملHigher late summer methane emission from central than northern European lakes
Quantifying methane (CH4) emissions from lakes is important for regional and global greenhouse gas emission inventories. However, regional and global estimates suffer from methodologically inconsistent data sets and from the situation that systematic flux measurements are presently available only for some regions in the world. In particular, many temperate regions dominated by agricultural land...
